About Kinondo Sacred Forest

Kinondo Sacred Forest is located near the coastal region of Kenya within the Coast Province, close to the town of Kinondo. This forest forms part of a wider network of sacred Kaya forests, protected not only for their ecological value but also for their cultural and spiritual importance to the local Digo community. Covering an area of dense indigenous coastal forest, the Kinondo Sacred Forest features tall canopy trees, a rich understory, and diverse flora and fauna including medicinal plants and species unique to East Africa's coastal ecosystems. It has long been regarded as a sacred place by the Digo people, who believe the forest houses ancestral spirits and holds powerful traditional significance. The forest is a refuge for various bird species, butterflies, insects, and small mammals. Visitors to Kinondo Sacred Forest can explore marked footpaths that wind through the forest, guided by local custodians who provide insight into the traditional uses of plants, as well as the spiritual stories tied to the forest. Birdwatching is popular, as the forest hosts rare coastal species. Despite its cultural protection, Kinondo Sacred Forest faces pressures from encroachment, deforestation, and climate change. Efforts by local and national organizations aim to preserve both its cultural legacy and ecological integrity. The forest offers a tranquil outdoor experience combining nature appreciation and cultural education, appealing to eco-tourists, cultural historians, and birdwatchers alike.
